Why this work?

Because of my mother. When I was a young man, my mother went through a divorce. She was capable and hard-working, but she had no one to help her navigate the important financial decisions that followed, and she struggled financially for years. I’ve devoted my career to being that person for women like her.

What’s the first question you ask in a first meeting?

Some version of “why does money matter to you?”

I know that sounds like a soft opening, but the most important things about financial planning have very little to do with finance. If I don’t understand what you actually want your life to look like, I’m just managing a portfolio (and you can get that anywhere).

What do you wish more people understood about money?

That “do I have enough?” is the wrong question. The better one is “enough for what?” I work with women who did everything right. They saved consistently, made careful decisions, avoided foolish risks. Then they reach retirement and can’t bring themselves to spend a dime of it. Money is a tool for building the life you want, not a scoreboard. Part of my job is giving people permission to enjoy what they spent forty years building.

What kind of client do you do your best work with?

Women in their 60s and 70s who are at a turning point: a divorce, the loss of a spouse, or the move into retirement.

I also serve a variety of other clients who are preparing for or already in retirement, working alongside estate planning attorneys and tax accountants for a coordinated approach to their wealth management.

Where would I find you on a Saturday?

Most likely at our place on Lake Oconee with my wife Elizabeth and our dog — fishing, or playing acoustic guitar.

Elizabeth and I also volunteer with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, and I serve on the board of trustees for the Georgia Eye Bank, which recovers and distributes corneal tissue to restore people’s sight.
